New laws for non-residential buildings

From 7 September 2007, there are new asbestos laws affecting non-residential buildings. The new laws require people in control of a building to develop and maintain a current asbestos register, supported by a management plan to ensure all materials containing asbestos are safely managed. Asbestos is a hazardous substance. It is important that you comply with the new laws to protect the health and safety of everyone who uses your building.

While most building products containing asbestos were phased out in the mid 1980s, other materials continued to be used in plant rooms and other equipment right up until the national ban on the use of all forms of asbestos in 2003.

If your building was completed after 31 December, 2003, you are not required to take any action.

The date by which you must comply with these laws varies depending on what type of building it is.

It’s dead easy. Download the step-by-step guide on the process you need to follow by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page, or find a summary in the Fact Sheets on this site.  For a list of Licensed Asbestos Assessors click here.
